Plagiarism

Plagiarism is presenting another person’s words, ideas, or creative work as one’s own without adequate acknowledgment. It can occur in writing, research, art, and other forms of expression.

Attribution: The acknowledgment of a source or creator when using their words, ideas, or work. Adequate attribution is the main way to distinguish acknowledged borrowing from plagiarism.
Academic misconduct: Behavior that violates an educational institution’s rules for academic work. Schools commonly classify plagiarism as a form of academic misconduct.
Self-plagiarism: Reuse of one’s previously submitted or published work without appropriate disclosure or permission. It extends plagiarism rules to undisclosed reuse of one’s own earlier work.
Academic integrity: The principles and practices that support honesty and responsibility in academic work. Institutional integrity policies define expectations for attribution in student work.
Artificial intelligence authorship: The question of whether and how AI systems can be credited as authors of generated work. AI-generated passages complicate judgments about whose expression is being presented.
Citation: A formal reference identifying the source of borrowed information or ideas. Citations make sources traceable, though citation alone may not clarify copied wording.
Research misconduct: Serious breaches of standards governing research, including fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism. Plagiarism in research can compromise the reliability and integrity of the scholarly record.
Copyright: A legal framework granting creators control over specified uses of original works. A work can be plagiarized without infringing copyright, or infringe copyright with attribution.
Scientific publishing: The system through which research findings are reviewed, published, and entered into the scholarly record. Publishers use editorial checks and policies to address copied text and ideas.
Authorship: The status of being the creator or responsible originator of a work. Plagiarism disputes often hinge on who deserves credit for a work’s expression or ideas.
