Platt Amendment

The Platt Amendment was a 1901 U.S. law that restricted Cuban sovereignty by conditioning Cuban independence and authorizing U.S. intervention under specified circumstances.

Cuban–American Treaty of Relations: A 1903 treaty that incorporated the Platt Amendment’s conditions into relations between Cuba and the United States. It gave the amendment’s restrictions a lasting treaty basis after U.S. military occupation ended.
Spanish–American War: An 1898 war between Spain and the United States that ended Spanish rule in Cuba and expanded U.S. power overseas. The war brought U.S. forces to Cuba and set the stage for occupation and independence negotiations.
Cuban War of Independence: A Cuban uprising against Spanish rule, fought from 1895 until the Spanish–American War intervened in 1898. The struggle’s demand for self-rule collided with U.S. control over the terms of the postwar settlement.
Monroe Doctrine: A U.S. foreign-policy principle opposing new European colonization or political intervention in the Americas. The amendment extended U.S. claims to regional guardianship from resisting Europe to intervening in Cuba.
Guantanamo Bay Naval Base: A U.S. naval installation on land leased from Cuba at Guantánamo Bay. The amendment required Cuba to lease land for U.S. coaling or naval stations; the treaty established the Guantánamo lease.
Teller Amendment: An 1898 U.S. congressional resolution declaring that the United States would not annex Cuba after defeating Spain. Its promise of Cuban independence contrasted with the later restrictions imposed by the Platt Amendment.
Second Occupation of Cuba: A U.S. military occupation of Cuba from 1906 to 1909, following political unrest and a request for intervention. The amendment’s intervention clause supplied the framework invoked during this later U.S. occupation.
Roosevelt Corollary: A 1904 addition to the Monroe Doctrine asserting a U.S. right to intervene in Latin American countries facing instability or debt problems. It generalized the amendment’s intervention logic beyond Cuba to the wider region.
Cuban independence: Cuba’s emergence as a formally independent republic in 1902 after Spanish colonial rule and U.S. military occupation. The amendment made the terms of Cuba’s independence contingent on accepting its restrictions.
Leonard Wood: A U.S. Army officer who served as military governor of Cuba during the transition to independence. Wood’s administration oversaw the Cuban constitutional process under pressure to accept the amendment.
