Podzol

A strongly acidic soil with a pale, leached horizon over a darker layer where iron, aluminum, and organic matter accumulate. It commonly forms under coniferous or heath vegetation in cool, humid environments.

Podzolization: A soil-forming process in which dissolved organic compounds mobilize iron and aluminum from upper horizons and carry them downward. This process creates the pale eluvial layer and the accumulation horizon that define podzols.
Soil profile: A vertical section of soil showing its sequence of horizons from the surface downward. A podzol’s diagnostic pale and accumulation layers are features of its profile.
Soil fertility: The capacity of soil to supply nutrients and support plant growth. Strong acidity and leaching often leave podzol surface horizons poor in available nutrients.
Laterite: A soil or weathered material rich in iron and aluminum oxides, formed through intense leaching in warm climates. Laterites also reflect leaching, but develop under warm conditions and accumulate oxides rather than podzol humus-metal complexes.
Eluviation: The downward removal of dissolved or suspended material from a soil horizon by percolating water. It removes iron, aluminum, and organic matter from the podzol’s pale upper horizon.
Soil acidity: The degree to which soil is acidic, commonly measured by its pH. Low pH promotes the mobilization of metals and organic compounds during podzolization.
Liming (soil): The application of calcium- or magnesium-bearing materials to soil to reduce acidity. Liming can raise podzol pH, though it does not by itself reverse the soil’s profile.
Chernozem: A dark, humus-rich soil associated with grasslands and high natural fertility. Chernozems retain abundant surface organic matter, unlike the strongly leached, acidic upper horizons of podzols.
Illuviation: The deposition of material transported from an upper soil horizon into a lower one. It builds the darker subsurface horizon beneath the leached layer.
Parent material: The mineral or organic material from which soil develops. Its mineral composition and drainage influence which podzol horizons can develop.
