Point-of-view shot

A film shot that presents a scene from the apparent visual perspective of a character, aligning the camera’s view with what that character sees.

Eyeline match: An editing technique that cuts from a character looking to the object or person they appear to see. It connects a character’s gaze to the view presented by a point-of-view shot.
Camera angle: The position and orientation from which a camera records a subject or scene. Angle shapes a point-of-view shot, but does not by itself identify a character’s perspective.
Suspense: A state of anxious anticipation about an uncertain future event. Restricted character perspective can withhold threats or reveal them at carefully chosen moments.
Over-the-shoulder shot: A shot framed from behind one subject, with part of that subject visible in the foreground. It suggests a character’s viewing position while retaining an external camera presence.
Shot/reverse shot: An editing pattern that alternates between two subjects, commonly during a conversation. A character’s point-of-view shot can supply one side of this alternating exchange.
Camera movement: A change in a camera’s position or orientation during a shot. Movement can imitate a character’s bodily motion or scanning gaze.
Audience identification: A film technique or effect that aligns viewers emotionally or perceptually with a character. Sharing a character’s apparent view can strengthen perceptual alignment.
Reaction shot: A shot showing a character’s response to an event, object, or another character. It shows the observer rather than presenting the view that prompts the reaction.
Continuity editing: A system of editing that makes changes between shots appear spatially and temporally coherent. Its conventions help viewers read a perspective shot as belonging to a character.
Framing (visual arts): The selection and arrangement of visible content within an image’s boundaries. Framing determines which parts of the character’s apparent view enter the shot.
