Steadicam

A camera stabilization system that isolates a moving camera from an operator’s body, producing smooth shots while the operator walks or runs.

Camera stabilizer: A device or system that reduces unwanted camera movement during filming. Steadicam is a wearable, mechanically balanced member of this broader class.
Steadicam sled: The central Steadicam assembly carrying the camera, counterweights, monitor, and battery. Its mass distribution and camera mounting determine the system’s balance.
Garrett Brown: An American cinematographer and inventor who developed the Steadicam. Brown designed the original system and demonstrated its expressive camera movement.
Tracking shot: A continuous shot in which the camera moves through space alongside or around its subject. Steadicam makes sustained tracking movement possible without laying a camera track.
Shoulder rig: A camera support that rests on an operator's shoulder to improve handheld stability and balance. It stabilizes through body contact but transmits more of the operator’s motion than Steadicam.
Camera gimbal: A pivoting support that stabilizes a camera around one or more rotational axes. Gimbals stabilize through rotating joints, unlike Steadicam’s spring-isolated, balanced arm.
Steadicam vest: A fitted body support that transfers a Steadicam rig's weight to the operator's torso. It anchors the arm while spreading the equipment’s load across the body.
Rocky: A 1976 sports drama film written by and starring Sylvester Stallone. Its Philadelphia running montage showcased early Steadicam footage to a wide audience.
Point of view shot: A shot that presents the scene from a character's apparent visual perspective. A moving Steadicam can create a controlled, mobile character viewpoint.
Steadicam Merlin: A compact, lightweight Steadicam stabilizer designed for small cameras. It applies the Steadicam balancing approach to cameras too light for full-size rigs.
