Polish Nationalism

Polish nationalism comprises political movements and ideas that define Polish national identity and promote Polish national interests. It has taken changing forms shaped by partition, sovereignty, religion, and competing visions of the nation.

Partitions of Poland: The late-eighteenth-century divisions of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth among Russia, Prussia, and Austria, which erased Poland from the map. The loss of statehood drove efforts to preserve Polish identity and restore independence.
Adam Mickiewicz: A Polish Romantic poet whose works became central to Polish national culture during the partitions. His poetry gave spiritual and historical language to hopes for national renewal.
Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth: A multiethnic state that existed from 1569 until the late-eighteenth-century partitions of Poland. Its political legacy supplied both symbols and contested precedents for later national claims.
Polish socialism: A range of socialist movements in Poland that sought social transformation, often alongside debates over independence. Socialists disagreed over whether national independence or international class solidarity should come first.
Second Polish Republic: The independent Polish state established in 1918 and lasting until the German and Soviet invasions of 1939. Its borders and policies turned competing nationalist programs into questions of state governance.
Kościuszko Uprising: A 1794 insurrection led by Tadeusz Kościuszko against Russian and Prussian control of Polish lands. Its defeat deepened the association between national revival and armed resistance.
Roman Dmowski: A Polish nationalist politician and principal leader of the National Democracy movement. He advanced an ethnonational vision centered on political organization and Polish cultural dominance.
Polish language: A West Slavic language spoken chiefly in Poland and by Polish communities worldwide. Its use in schools, publishing, and worship helped sustain identity under partition.
Federalism in Poland: Political proposals for a federation of Poland with neighboring peoples or states, especially in eastern Europe. Federalist plans challenged the idea of a unitary Polish nation-state.
Polish–Ukrainian War: An armed conflict from 1918 to 1919 between Polish and Ukrainian forces over territories including eastern Galicia. Competing national claims over the region produced a direct conflict after the First World War.
