Polish Round Table Agreement

The April 1989 agreement between Poland’s communist government and opposition legalized Solidarity, established partly competitive elections, and began a negotiated transition from communist rule.

Solidarity: A Polish trade union and social movement that challenged communist rule and became a major opposition force. The agreement legalized the movement after years of repression and exclusion.
Polish crisis of 1988: A wave of strikes and economic unrest in Poland that pressured the government to negotiate with the opposition. The strikes helped bring the government and Solidarity to the negotiating table.
