Knowra Polylactic acid Polylactic acid Polylactic acid (PLA) is a thermoplastic polyester made from lactic acid or lactide. Its renewable feedstocks, processability, and biodegradation under specific conditions make it useful in packaging, fibers, medical materials, and additive manufacturing.
Lactic acid : An organic acid produced by fermentation or chemical synthesis and used to make polylactic acid. Its molecules can be linked directly into PLA or converted first into lactide.
Fused filament fabrication : An additive-manufacturing process that builds objects by depositing successive layers of melted thermoplastic filament. PLA is a common filament because it prints at relatively low temperatures.
Polyethylene terephthalate : A strong thermoplastic polyester widely used in beverage bottles, packaging, and synthetic fibers. PET is a familiar packaging polyester, but it is not industrially compostable like some PLA products.
Industrial composting : Controlled aerobic decomposition of organic materials at elevated temperatures in managed facilities. Many PLA products biodegrade effectively only under industrial composting conditions.
Polyester : A polymer whose main chains contain repeating ester linkages. PLA belongs to this polymer family, whose bond chemistry shapes its properties.
Lactide : A cyclic dimer of lactic acid used as a monomer for ring-opening polymerization. Industrial PLA commonly forms by opening lactide rings into long polymer chains.
Biodegradable packaging : Packaging designed to break down through biological activity under specified environmental conditions. PLA is formed into films, trays, and containers marketed for biodegradability.
Polyhydroxyalkanoates : A family of polyesters made by microorganisms and stored as intracellular carbon reserves. PHA offers different biodegradation conditions and material properties from PLA.
Life-cycle assessment : A method for evaluating the environmental impacts of a product across its life cycle. It compares PLA’s feedstock and production impacts with those of competing materials.
Thermoplastic : A polymer that softens when heated and hardens when cooled, allowing repeated melt processing. PLA’s thermoplastic behavior enables extrusion, molding, fiber spinning, and printing.
