Polymer chemistry

Polymer chemistry studies how polymers are synthesized, structured, transformed by chemical reactions, and related to their properties. It connects molecular architecture to material behavior.

Chain-growth polymerization: Polymerization in which reactive chain ends add monomer molecules one at a time. This pathway builds many common polymers, including polyethylene and polystyrene.
Monomer: A molecule that can react with similar or different molecules to form a polymer. Monomers supply the repeating units from which polymer chains are built.
Polyethylene: A thermoplastic polymer made from ethylene, with properties that vary by chain structure and density. Its varied branching and crystallinity illustrate structure–property control in commodity plastics.
Inorganic polymer: A polymer whose backbone contains elements other than carbon, often alongside carbon. Its backbone chemistry contrasts with the carbon-rich structures common in polymer synthesis.
Sequence-controlled polymer: A polymer whose monomer order is deliberately specified or tightly controlled. Precise sequence control could create functions unavailable to statistically mixed chains.
Step-growth polymerization: Polymer formation through reactions between functional groups on molecules of any size. It explains how polyesters and polyamides form as molecular weight rises.
Molecular weight distribution: The distribution of molecular masses among chains in a polymer sample. Polymer samples contain chains of different lengths, affecting processing and performance.
Polyethylene terephthalate: A polyester used in fibers, films, and beverage containers. Its synthesis and crystallization connect polymer chemistry to packaging and textiles.
Biodegradable polymer: A polymer that microorganisms or enzymes can break down into simpler substances under specified conditions. Its degradability depends on chemical structure and environment, not merely biological origin.
Mechanochemistry: The study of chemical reactions initiated or altered by mechanical force. Force-responsive bonds offer routes to polymers that signal or adapt under stress.
