Polynomial ring

A polynomial ring consists of polynomials in one or more indeterminates with coefficients in a specified ring, using polynomial addition and multiplication.

Ring (mathematics): A set with addition and multiplication satisfying associative and distributive laws, with additive inverses and often a multiplicative identity. The coefficients come from a ring, whose operations determine the polynomial ring’s arithmetic.
Polynomial addition: The operation that adds polynomials by adding coefficients of matching powers or monomials. Addition is performed coefficient by coefficient, treating missing terms as zero.
Algebraic geometry: The study of geometric objects defined by polynomial equations. Polynomial rings supply the equations and coordinate algebras used to describe varieties.
Polynomial ring over a field: A polynomial ring whose coefficients lie in a field. Field coefficients give strong factorization and division properties absent over arbitrary rings.
Commutative ring: A ring whose multiplication is commutative. Commutativity of the coefficient ring affects factorization and many familiar polynomial results.
Polynomial multiplication: The operation that multiplies polynomials by distributing products of terms and combining like monomials. Multiplication convolves coefficients and adds exponents of matching variables.
Ideal (ring theory): An additive subgroup of a ring closed under multiplication by every ring element. Ideals of polynomial rings encode systems of polynomial equations and their consequences.
Laurent polynomial: A finite sum of integer powers of variables, allowing negative exponents. Laurent polynomials enlarge polynomial rings by permitting inverses of variables.
Indeterminate: A formal symbol used to construct expressions in algebra without assigning it a fixed value. Polynomial variables are formal indeterminates, not numbers awaiting substitution.
Polynomial degree: A measure of the highest exponent or total exponent sum among a polynomial’s nonzero terms. Degree tracks how polynomial multiplication and addition change term complexity.
