Potash mining

Potash mining extracts potassium-rich salts from underground deposits or surface brines, chiefly to produce fertilizer. Methods include conventional underground mining, solution mining, and solar evaporation.

Room-and-pillar mining: An underground mining method that removes material in rooms while leaving pillars to support the roof. This is a common way to extract deep, solid potash beds while supporting the mine.
Potash: A group of water-soluble potassium salts used chiefly in fertilizers and industrial products. The mined salts are collectively marketed as potash.
Fertilizer: A natural or manufactured material added to soil or plants to supply nutrients and support growth. Agricultural fertilizer is the main destination for mined potash.
Mine tailings: Waste materials left after valuable minerals are separated from mined ore. Potash processing produces salt-rich residues that require long-term management.
Saskatchewan potash industry: The mining and processing industry based on extensive potash deposits in Saskatchewan, Canada. Saskatchewan is a leading center of large-scale underground potash production.
Solution mining: A mining method that dissolves underground minerals with injected fluid and pumps the resulting brine to the surface. It accesses potash without conventional excavation, especially where deposits are deep or difficult to mine.
Sylvite: The mineral form of potassium chloride and the principal source of mined potash. Many mines extract sylvinite ore containing sylvite mixed with halite.
NPK fertilizer: A fertilizer labeled by its proportions of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium nutrients. Potash supplies the potassium component in many blended fertilizers.
Ground subsidence: The sinking or collapse of ground caused by underground voids or changes in subsurface conditions. Underground extraction can leave voids that create subsidence risks.
Kali and Salz: A German mining company known for potash and salt production. Its operations illustrate the long-established potash mining industry in Germany.
