Precautionary principle

The precautionary principle supports protective action when plausible threats of serious or irreversible harm exist despite incomplete scientific certainty. It guides decisions under uncertainty without requiring proof of damage before action.

Risk assessment: A systematic process for identifying hazards, estimating exposure, and evaluating the likelihood and severity of harm. It supplies evidence about threats before certainty is possible.
Vorsorgeprinzip: The German precautionary principle, developed in environmental policy to justify preventive action against uncertain risks. Its use in West German environmental policy helped establish the principle's modern form.

Endocrine disruptor: A chemical that interferes with hormone systems in organisms. Potential effects at low doses and across long periods raise precautionary policy questions.
ALARA: A radiation-protection principle requiring exposures to be kept as low as reasonably achievable. It is a narrower, operational safety standard rather than a general policy approach to uncertainty.
