Responsible innovation : An approach to steering innovation toward socially desirable and ethically acceptable outcomes. The concept developed alongside RRI and shares its focus on anticipatory, inclusive governance.
Research integrity : The adherence to professional and ethical standards in conducting and reporting research. Research integrity focuses on trustworthy conduct, while RRI also asks what research should pursue.
Reflexivity : Critical examination of the assumptions, values, and limits shaping knowledge and practice. It prompts researchers to scrutinize their own goals, methods, and definitions of progress.

Ethical, legal and social implications : A framework for examining ethical, legal, and social issues associated with scientific and technological developments. ELSI often studies implications of research; RRI more explicitly seeks to shape research processes and direction.
Inclusion : The practice of enabling people with varied backgrounds and interests to participate in decisions and institutions. RRI uses inclusion to bring affected groups and diverse perspectives into research decisions.
Technology assessment : The systematic study of potential effects of technologies to inform decisions about their development and use. It offers methods for considering societal implications before technologies are widely adopted.
