Prince Henry the Navigator

Prince Henry the Navigator (1394–1460) was a Portuguese royal who sponsored voyages along the West African coast. His patronage helped expand Portugal’s maritime activity and Atlantic exploration.

Portuguese Age of Discovery: A period of Portuguese maritime exploration and overseas expansion beginning in the 15th century. Henry’s sponsorship helped establish the voyages that launched Portugal’s wider expansion.

Madeira: An Atlantic archipelago colonized by Portugal during the 15th century. Henry backed its settlement and sugar production, which became a model for Portuguese Atlantic colonization.
Volta do mar: A Portuguese sailing strategy that used prevailing winds and ocean currents to make long Atlantic voyages. Returning from African waters often required broad offshore routes rather than sailing directly against winds.
