Principality of Antioch

A Latin Christian state established by crusaders in 1098 around Antioch in northern Syria. It was one of the Crusader states and endured, often under pressure from neighboring powers, until its conquest by the Mamluks in 1268.

First Crusade: A military expedition launched by western European Christians in 1096 that captured Jerusalem in 1099. Its armies besieged and seized Antioch, creating the principality.
Latin Church: The Christian church in western Europe, organized under the authority of the pope and using Latin liturgy. Latin clergy and ecclesiastical institutions sustained the principality’s Catholic identity.
