Prison literature

Prison literature is writing composed in or about confinement, including memoir, fiction, poetry, and political testimony. It explores how imprisonment shapes freedom, power, identity, and language.

The Consolation of Philosophy: Boethius’s philosophical dialogue, written during imprisonment before his execution in the sixth century. Its imagined dialogue turns a death sentence into a meditation on fortune, justice, and freedom.
Prison memoir: A first-person account of a writer’s experience of imprisonment. Memoir makes lived confinement, memory, and personal change central to the genre.
Boethius: A Roman statesman and philosopher who wrote The Consolation of Philosophy while imprisoned before execution. His late antique dialogue became an enduring model of philosophical writing under sentence of death.
Prison censorship: The restriction or monitoring of communication by prison authorities. Censorship determines which prison texts can be written, sent, or published.
Exile literature: Writing shaped by forced or chosen residence away from one’s homeland. Exile displaces writers geographically, while prison confines them within an institution.
The House of the Dead: Fyodor Dostoevsky’s 1861–62 novel drawing on his imprisonment in a Siberian penal camp. It renders convict life through a narrator whose observations expose the camp’s social order.
Prison poetry: Poetry written in prison or shaped by the experience of incarceration. Poems can compress restricted experience into forms suited to limited privacy and materials.
John Bunyan: An English preacher and writer imprisoned for unauthorized preaching, author of The Pilgrim’s Progress. His imprisonment helped shape a religious allegory that became a major work of English literature.
Prison writing workshop: A program in which incarcerated people develop writing through instruction and peer discussion. Workshops create supported spaces for literary work inside institutions that restrict communication.
Holocaust literature: Writing that represents the persecution and mass murder of Jews and other victims by Nazi Germany. Its historical scope and genocidal violence differ from literature centered on incarceration.
