Prostate

The prostate is a gland below the bladder that surrounds the urethra and adds fluid to semen in many mammals.

Prostatic urethra: The section of the urethra that passes through the prostate. The prostate encircles this passage, so changes in gland size can narrow it.
Urinary bladder: A muscular organ that stores urine before it leaves the body. The prostate lies immediately below the bladder, at the outlet urine traverses.
Prostate-specific antigen: A protein produced mainly by prostate cells and measured in blood tests. Its blood level can inform assessment of prostate conditions, though it is not cancer-specific.
Acute bacterial prostatitis: A sudden bacterial infection of the prostate that causes inflammation and often urinary or systemic symptoms. It is an infectious inflammation, unlike noninfectious enlargement or malignancy.
Prostatic fluid: A secretion from the prostate that forms part of semen. This glandular secretion is the prostate’s direct contribution to semen.
Urethra: A tube that carries urine out of the body and, in males, also carries semen. The prostate surrounds one segment of this shared urinary and reproductive passage.
Digital rectal examination: A clinical examination in which a gloved finger is used to assess organs through the rectal wall. The prostate’s position allows clinicians to feel part of it through the rectum.
Chronic prostatitis: Persistent or recurrent pelvic pain and urinary symptoms associated with prostate inflammation or related conditions. Its chronic pain pattern is distinct from an enlarging gland or prostate tumor.
Ejaculation: The release of semen from the reproductive tract through the penis. Prostatic fluid enters the urethra as reproductive-tract muscles propel semen outward.
Male reproductive system: The organs and structures involved in producing and delivering sperm in males. The prostate is an accessory gland within this reproductive system.
