Protogyny

Protogyny is a flowering pattern in which a flower’s female reproductive phase occurs before its male phase. This timing can reduce self-fertilization by separating stigma receptivity from pollen release.

Dichogamy: Dichogamy is the temporal separation of female and male reproductive function in a flower. Protogyny is the female-first form of this broader timing pattern.
Protandry: Protandry is a reproductive pattern in which a flower’s male phase precedes its female phase. It reverses protogyny’s order of reproductive phases.
Cross-pollination: Cross-pollination is the transfer of pollen between flowers on different plants of the same species. Protogyny can favor pollen arriving from another plant during the female phase.

Heterostyly: Heterostyly is a floral polymorphism in which flowers differ in the relative heights of anthers and stigmas. It promotes cross-pollination through floral structure, not female-first timing.
