Pyrrole

Pyrrole is an aromatic five-membered ring containing four carbon atoms and one nitrogen atom. Its nitrogen lone pair contributes to the ring’s six π electrons.

Hückel's rule: A rule predicting aromaticity in planar, cyclic, conjugated systems with 4n + 2 π electrons. Pyrrole has six π electrons, satisfying the rule with n equal to one.
Heterocyclic compound: A cyclic compound whose ring contains at least one atom other than carbon. Pyrrole is a nitrogen-containing example of this broad structural family.
Furan: An aromatic five-membered ring containing four carbon atoms and one oxygen atom. Furan substitutes oxygen for pyrrole’s nitrogen, changing lone-pair donation and chemical behavior.
Porphyrin: A large aromatic macrocycle built from four pyrrole-derived rings joined by carbon bridges. Pyrrole units form the structural foundation of porphyrins and their metal complexes.

Thiophene: An aromatic five-membered ring containing four carbon atoms and one sulfur atom. Thiophene is the sulfur analogue of pyrrole, with different aromaticity and reactivity.
Heme: An iron-containing porphyrin cofactor found in proteins such as hemoglobin and cytochromes. Its porphyrin ring contains four pyrrole-derived subunits coordinating the central iron.
Pyrrole nitrogen: The nitrogen atom in pyrrole, bonded to two ring carbons and bearing one hydrogen in unsubstituted pyrrole. Its lone pair supplies two electrons to the aromatic ring, making it less available for proton binding.
Nitrogen: A chemical element with atomic number 7 that forms bonds in a wide range of molecules. One nitrogen atom replaces a carbon in pyrrole’s five-membered ring.
