Qadi

A qadi is a judge empowered to resolve disputes and apply Islamic law in a Muslim community. The office has varied across Islamic history, legal traditions, and political systems.

Islamic jurisprudence: The scholarly interpretation and development of Islamic legal rules and methods. It supplies the legal reasoning and interpretive traditions that inform a qadi’s decisions.
Medina: A city in western Arabia that became the early Muslim community’s political center. Muhammad’s leadership in Medina combined dispute resolution with the authority later associated with judges.
Muhammad: The religious and political leader regarded by Muslims as the final prophet of Islam. His role in resolving disputes in Medina became an early precedent for Muslim adjudication.
Mufti: A Muslim jurist qualified to issue a nonbinding legal opinion, or fatwa. Unlike a qadi’s judgment in a case, a mufti’s opinion does not itself impose a court ruling.
Fiqh: The human understanding of Islamic law derived through legal interpretation. A qadi applies fiqh, whose rulings can differ among schools and scholars.
Rashidun Caliphate: The first caliphate, traditionally dated from 632 to 661 CE. Early caliphs appointed officials to administer justice as Muslim rule expanded.
Abu Yusuf: An eighth-century Hanafi jurist who served as chief judge under the Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid. His appointment illustrates how scholarly authority and caliphal judicial office could converge.
Mazalim: A historical form of ruler-led adjudication addressing complaints against officials or abuses of power. Mazalim proceedings offered a route to redress distinct from ordinary qadi jurisdiction.
Sharia: The religious and ethical path in Islam, understood through scripture and legal interpretation. Qadi jurisdiction is commonly described as applying sharia, though its scope varies by place and era.
Umayyad Caliphate: The caliphate ruled by the Umayyad dynasty from 661 to 750 CE. Umayyad administration helped establish judgeship as a regular office across an expanding empire.
