The Qing requirement that Han Chinese men shave the front of the head and wear a long braid. The hairstyle became a visible sign of submission to Manchu rule.

Qing dynasty: A Manchu-led Chinese dynasty that ruled from 1644 to 1912. Its founders imposed the queue as a public marker of allegiance after conquering China.
