Regency of Algiers

The Regency of Algiers was a North African polity centered on Algiers, formally part of the Ottoman Empire but largely self-governing from the sixteenth century until French conquest in 1830.

Dey of Algiers: The ruler of Algiers from 1671 until the French conquest in 1830. Deys led the regency’s government after replacing the earlier military commanders.
Spanish conquest of Oran: The Spanish capture of Oran in 1509, which helped prompt local appeals for Ottoman military support. Spanish expansion along the coast created the conditions for Ottoman intervention.
