Religious education

Religious education is the teaching and learning of religious beliefs, texts, practices, and traditions. It takes place in schools, religious communities, and other settings.

Confessional education: Education that teaches a particular religious tradition from within its beliefs and commitments. It distinguishes instruction shaped by a faith commitment from teaching about religion at a distance.
Religious literacy: The ability to understand how religions shape and are shaped by history, culture, and institutions. It is a common educational aim beyond memorizing doctrines or rituals.
Secularism: A principle or political arrangement separating religious authority from some or all public institutions. Its varied forms influence whether and how public institutions include religious instruction.
Religious pluralism: The coexistence of multiple religious traditions within a society, often accompanied by recognition of their differences. Education can prepare people to understand and live amid religious diversity.
Non-confessional religious education: Teaching about religions without requiring students or teachers to affirm their beliefs. It offers a common approach where schools serve students from varied or nonreligious backgrounds.
Scriptural interpretation: The study of how sacred texts are read, explained, and applied. Interpretation connects the teaching of religious texts to differing methods and traditions.
Laïcité: A French model of secularism that restricts religious expression in certain public institutions. It frames distinctive limits on religion in public schooling and its curriculum.
Interreligious dialogue: Structured exchange among people from different religious traditions about beliefs, practices, and shared concerns. Knowledge developed through education can support informed dialogue across traditions.
Catechesis: Instruction that forms people in the beliefs and practices of a Christian community. It is a specific form of religious formation often conducted by churches.
Ritual: A patterned action performed according to a community's conventions, often carrying symbolic or religious meaning. Learning ritual can transmit religious practice through participation and explanation.
