Republic of Florence

An Italian city-state centered on Florence, governed through republican institutions for much of its history before becoming the hereditary Duchy of Florence in 1532.

Signoria of Florence: Florence’s chief governing body, composed of elected priors and the gonfaloniere of justice. This executive council embodied the republic’s formal government.
