Restorationism

Restorationism is a Christian movement seeking to recover the beliefs and practices of the earliest church. Its communities differ over which early Christian teachings and forms should be restored.

Second Great Awakening: A Protestant revival movement in the United States during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Its revivals fostered the setting in which several American restorationist movements emerged.
Early Christianity: The beliefs, communities, and practices of Christians during the first centuries after Jesus. Restorationism takes this formative period as its principal model for church renewal.
Christian unity: The aspiration for visible fellowship and cooperation among Christian churches and traditions. Restorationists have pursued unity by appealing to shared New Testament faith and practice.
Protestant Reformation: A sixteenth-century movement that challenged Roman Catholic authority and produced enduring Protestant churches. Restorationism extends reformist criticism by seeking a more direct return to the earliest church.
Stone-Campbell Movement: A Christian movement originating in the United States that sought unity through a return to New Testament Christianity. It became the most influential American expression of restorationist ideals.
New Testament: The collection of Christian scriptures comprising accounts of Jesus, apostolic writings, and related texts. Restorationists commonly treat its descriptions and commands as the primary evidence for early church life.
Believers' baptism: Baptism administered to people who personally profess Christian faith, rather than to infants. Many restorationist churches connect this practice to New Testament accounts of conversion.
Anabaptism: A Christian movement originating in the sixteenth century that emphasizes believers' baptism and a disciplined church community. Its practices overlap with restorationist aims, but it arose within a distinct Reformation-era tradition.
Alexander Campbell: A nineteenth-century religious leader who helped found the Stone-Campbell movement. His preaching and publications shaped restorationist arguments about scripture, baptism, and church unity.
Sola scriptura: The Protestant principle that scripture is the supreme authority for Christian doctrine and practice. It supports restorationist efforts to test inherited teachings against biblical texts.
