Knowra RGB color model RGB color model The RGB color model represents colors as combinations of red, green, and blue light. It is additive: increasing the light from all three channels produces brighter colors, with white at their maximum.
Additive color : A color-mixing method in which combined light produces the resulting color. RGB is the best-known additive model: its three primary lights combine to make other colors.
Visible spectrum : The range of electromagnetic wavelengths detectable by typical human vision. RGB primaries approximate color stimulation using selected portions of visible light.
Cathode-ray tube : An electronic display that forms images by directing electron beams onto a phosphor-coated screen. Its red, green, and blue phosphors established a direct physical implementation of additive RGB.
CMYK color model : A subtractive color model using cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks for printing. Printing absorbs and reflects light, unlike RGB displays, which emit it.
James Clerk Maxwell : A Scottish physicist whose work unified electricity, magnetism, and light and advanced color science. His experiments demonstrated color image reproduction using three separate color records.
RGB color space : A defined range of colors represented using red, green, and blue coordinates. A model alone does not specify exact colors; a color space defines its primaries and range.
Trichromacy : Color vision based on three classes of cone photoreceptors with different spectral sensitivities. Three channels loosely parallel the three cone responses, though RGB values are not cone signals.
Liquid-crystal display : A display that modulates a backlight with liquid crystals and color filters. Most LCD pixels use red, green, and blue subpixels to create displayed colors.
HSL and HSV : Cylindrical color representations that express hue and saturation alongside lightness or value. They reorganize RGB colors into coordinates that are often easier to adjust by eye.
Three-color process : A method of reproducing color images through three records or channels corresponding to primary colors. RGB inherits the broader idea that three components can reproduce many perceived colors.
