Rhine

The Rhine is a major European river that rises in the Swiss Alps and flows through or along six countries before reaching the North Sea in the Netherlands.

Vorderrhein: The Anterior Rhine is a headstream of the Rhine in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. It begins one of the two principal branches that form the Alpine Rhine.
Rhine navigation: Rhine navigation is commercial and passenger transport along the river and its connected waterways. It makes the Rhine one of Europe’s principal inland shipping routes.

Hinterrhein: The Posterior Rhine is a headstream of the Rhine in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. It joins the Vorderrhein at Reichenau to form the Alpine Rhine.
Port of Rotterdam: The Port of Rotterdam is a major seaport in the Netherlands, situated at the Rhine–Meuse delta. It connects Rhine shipping with global maritime trade.
Rhine Glacier: The Rhine Glacier was a major ice sheet that covered parts of the northern Alpine foreland during the Pleistocene. Its advances reshaped the Alpine Rhine’s headwaters and surrounding landscape.
Treaty of Versailles: The Treaty of Versailles was the 1919 peace agreement that formally ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied powers. Its provisions internationalized control of the Rhine and demilitarized its western bank.
Aare: The Aare is a Swiss river that joins the Rhine near Koblenz, Switzerland. Its large discharge makes it the Rhine’s most substantial Alpine tributary.
Port of Duisburg: The Port of Duisburg is an inland port in Germany at the confluence of the Rhine and Ruhr. It anchors a major freight hub on the lower Rhine.
