Richard I of England

Richard I was king of England from 1189 to 1199 and a leading commander of the Third Crusade. Known as Richard the Lionheart, he also ruled extensive lands across western France.

Third Crusade: A campaign from 1189 to 1192 by European Christian rulers to recover Jerusalem from Saladin. Richard’s best-known military expedition, where he won victories but failed to retake Jerusalem.
Angevin Empire: A collection of lands ruled by the Plantagenet dynasty across England, western France, and Ireland during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Richard inherited and defended this cross-Channel dominion, rather than a unified state.
Eleanor of Aquitaine: Duchess of Aquitaine and queen of France and England, who was a major political figure in the twelfth century. Richard’s mother helped secure his succession and acted as a political intermediary.
Anglo-French War of 1194–1199: A conflict between Richard I and Philip II over Plantagenet territories in France. After returning from captivity, Richard spent much of his remaining reign fighting Philip.
Siege of Acre: A siege from 1189 to 1191 in which crusader forces captured the coastal city of Acre. Richard’s arrival helped bring the prolonged siege to a successful conclusion.
Henry II of England: King of England from 1154 to 1189, whose domains included extensive territories in France. Richard’s inheritance and conflicts with his father shaped his path to the throne.
Saladin: The Muslim ruler who founded the Ayyubid dynasty and united Egypt and Syria in the twelfth century. Richard’s principal opponent in the Third Crusade also negotiated its settlement with him.
Siege of Château Gaillard: A 1203–1204 siege in which Philip II captured Richard I’s fortress overlooking the Seine. The loss of Richard’s key stronghold weakened the Plantagenet position after his death.
Battle of Arsuf: A 1191 battle in which Richard’s crusader army defeated Saladin’s forces near Arsuf. The victory demonstrated Richard’s skill in controlling a disciplined march under attack.
John, King of England: King of England from 1199 to 1216 and Richard I’s younger brother and successor. John governed England during Richard’s absence and inherited his contested continental lands.
