Right-of-way

A fencing convention that awards priority to an initiated attack when both fencers score together. It determines which touch counts in simultaneous or nearly simultaneous actions.

Attack (fencing): An offensive action in fencing that attempts to hit the opponent. A correctly initiated attack establishes the priority that right-of-way protects.
Foil (fencing): A light thrusting weapon used in fencing, with a valid target limited to the torso. Foil uses right-of-way to decide which touch scores when both fencers hit.
Fencing: A combat sport in which opponents use bladed weapons to score touches under defined rules. Right-of-way is a scoring convention within the rules of fencing.
Simultaneous hit (fencing): A scoring event in which both fencers register valid touches at nearly the same time. Right-of-way decides whether a simultaneous foil or sabre exchange awards one touch or none.
Parry: A defensive action that deflects an opponent’s blade to prevent a hit. A successful parry ends the attacker’s priority and creates an opening for a riposte.
Sabre (fencing): A fencing weapon that permits cuts and thrusts to the target area above the waist. Sabre also applies right-of-way when both fencers register a touch.
Priority (fencing): The recognized precedence of one fencer’s attack over an opponent’s simultaneous counterattack in foil and sabre. Priority is the status that right-of-way assigns and transfers during an exchange.
Double touch (fencing): An épée action in which both fencers land valid touches within the timing window for a double hit. In épée, a double touch can score for both fencers rather than being resolved by right-of-way.
Riposte: An offensive action made immediately after parrying an opponent’s attack. A riposte gains priority after a successful parry.
Épée: A thrusting fencing weapon in which the whole body is a valid target and simultaneous hits can score for both fencers. Unlike foil and sabre, épée does not use right-of-way to award a single priority touch.
