Río de la Plata

A broad estuary in southeastern South America, formed by the Paraná and Uruguay rivers and opening into the Atlantic Ocean.

Paraná River: A major South American river that flows through Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. Its lower course supplies one of the two great river systems that form the estuary.
Port of Buenos Aires: Argentina’s principal maritime port, located on the western shore of the Río de la Plata. It connects the estuary to the trade and transport networks of Buenos Aires.
Juan Díaz de Solís: A Spanish navigator who explored the Río de la Plata in 1516. His expedition was among the earliest European voyages into the estuary.
Amazon River: A South American river that carries more water than any other river in the world. Unlike the Río de la Plata, it reaches the Atlantic as a river rather than a broad estuary formed by two rivers.
Treaty of Madrid (1750): A 1750 agreement between Spain and Portugal that redrew parts of their South American colonial boundaries. Its boundary settlements addressed competing claims around the Río de la Plata region.
Uruguay River: A South American river that flows south between Argentina and Uruguay before joining the Paraná. Its waters meet the Paraná at the estuary’s head.
Port of Montevideo: Uruguay’s principal port, situated on the northern shore of the Río de la Plata. Its sheltered harbor makes the estuary a gateway for Uruguay’s maritime commerce.
Sebastian Cabot: A Venetian navigator in English and Spanish service who explored South American waterways in the sixteenth century. His voyages helped establish European knowledge of the river system beyond the estuary.
Orinoco River: A major river in northern South America that flows through Venezuela and forms a large delta. Its delta contrasts with the Río de la Plata’s open, funnel-shaped estuary.
Cisplatine War: A war from 1825 to 1828 between the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata and the Brazilian Empire. Conflict over the region’s eastern bank helped produce an independent Uruguay.
