Riparian zone

A riparian zone is land bordering a river, stream, lake, or other water body. Its proximity to water shapes distinctive soils, vegetation, wildlife, and ecological processes.

Floodplain: Relatively flat land beside a river that is periodically inundated when the river overflows its channel. Flooding connects the river to adjacent land and renews soils and habitats within many riparian zones.
Hydrology: The study of the movement, distribution, and properties of water on Earth and in the atmosphere. Water’s timing and movement determine how riparian conditions differ from surrounding uplands.
Riparian buffer: A strip of natural or restored vegetation maintained beside a water body to protect aquatic resources. Buffers are a practical land-management feature within riparian zones.
Habitat corridor: A connected strip of habitat that allows organisms to move between larger habitat areas. River edges can connect habitats across otherwise fragmented landscapes.
Colorado River: A major river in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, heavily altered by dams and water diversion. Its regulated flows illustrate how water management changes downstream riparian habitats.
Groundwater–surface water interaction: The exchange of water between underground aquifers and surface water bodies. This exchange sustains streamside soils and vegetation between rainstorms and floods.
Riparian vegetation: Plant communities growing along water bodies and adapted to their local moisture and disturbance regimes. These plants define much of the zone’s structure and influence its habitat and water quality.
Best management practice: A method or practice used to reduce environmental harm from land use or resource management. Agricultural and forestry practices can preserve or degrade riparian functions.
Biodiversity: The variety of life across genes, species, and ecosystems. The mix of water, land, and changing disturbance supports diverse communities.
Danube Delta: A large wetland delta in Romania and Ukraine where the Danube River enters the Black Sea. Its channels, floodplains, and wetlands show riparian habitats at a river’s transition to the sea.
