River incision

River incision is the downward erosion of a channel into bedrock or sediment by flowing water. It lowers the channel bed and can deepen valleys over time.

Stream power: The rate at which flowing water expends energy against a river channel, often expressed using discharge and slope. Stream power links river discharge and gradient to the energy available for bed erosion.
Fluvial erosion: The removal and transport of material by flowing water in rivers and streams. River incision is the downward component of this broader erosional process.
Knickpoint: A sharp break in a river's longitudinal profile, such as a waterfall or steep reach. Knickpoints can migrate upstream as incision responds to a change in slope or base level.

Shear stress incision model: A family of models relating bedrock erosion to the shear stress exerted by river flow. It connects local flow forces directly to predicted bedrock erosion.
River incision rate: The vertical rate at which a river channel lowers its bed through erosion. Rates are difficult to infer because measurements integrate changing flow and geological conditions.
