Rivonia Trial

The 1963–1964 South African trial of Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid activists accused of sabotage. Its defendants used the courtroom to challenge apartheid, and Mandela’s statement became a landmark declaration of political resistance.

Nelson Mandela: A South African anti-apartheid leader who became the country’s first Black president. He was the best-known defendant and delivered the trial’s defining statement.
Liliesleaf Farm: A farm in Rivonia used as a secret meeting place by African National Congress leaders. Police raided it in 1963, uncovering documents used as evidence.
African National Congress: A South African political organization founded in 1912 to oppose racial discrimination and advance Black political rights. Its leaders and members formed the core of the Rivonia defendants.
I Am Prepared to Die: Nelson Mandela’s 1964 statement from the dock defending the struggle against apartheid and expressing willingness to die for democratic ideals. Mandela delivered this address during the trial’s closing stage.

United Nations and apartheid: The international campaign by the United Nations against South Africa’s system of racial segregation and minority rule. The convictions intensified international pressure and condemnation of apartheid.
Govan Mbeki: A South African journalist, political activist, and African National Congress leader. He was convicted alongside Mandela and later became a prominent political prisoner.
Sabotage Act, 1962: A South African law that imposed severe penalties for acts classified as sabotage. The state used its broad provisions to prosecute the defendants.
