Robert Walpole

Robert Walpole (1676–1745) was a British statesman who led the government from 1721 to 1742, the longest tenure of any British prime minister.

George I: King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1714 to 1727, whose reign began the Hanoverian dynasty. Walpole became a leading minister during George I’s reign and benefited from royal confidence.
Prime Minister of the United Kingdom: The head of the UK government, who directs its policy and leads the Cabinet. Walpole’s tenure helped establish the office that later came to be called prime minister.
South Sea Bubble: The collapse in 1720 of speculative investment in the South Sea Company, which caused widespread financial losses. Walpole helped restore financial confidence after the crisis and rose to political prominence in its aftermath.
