Roman Forum

The central public square of ancient Rome, used for markets and as a setting for political, legal, religious, and civic life.

Rostra: A speakers’ platform in the Roman Forum, from which officials and orators addressed crowds. Political speeches and public announcements were delivered from this platform.
Roman Senate: The principal deliberative council of ancient Rome, composed of leading citizens and former magistrates. Senate meetings in the Curia made the Forum a center of state deliberation.
Roman Kingdom: The earliest traditional period of Roman history, ruled by kings before the establishment of the Republic. The Forum’s earliest development began during Rome’s monarchic period.
Forum of Caesar: A monumental public square built by Julius Caesar beside the Roman Forum and dedicated in 46 BCE. Its construction began the imperial-era expansion of Rome’s central civic district.
Funeral of Julius Caesar: The public funeral in Rome in 44 BCE at which Julius Caesar’s body was cremated in the Forum. The funeral turned the Forum into the setting for mass political upheaval.
Curia Julia: The Senate house completed under Julius Caesar and inaugurated by Augustus in 29 BCE. It housed Senate meetings at the Forum’s political heart.
Roman magistrate: An elected Roman official who exercised public authority, such as a consul, praetor, or aedile. Magistrates conducted business and ceremonies in the Forum’s public spaces.
Cloaca Maxima: An ancient drainage channel in Rome, developed into a major sewer that still carries water. Drainage helped make the Forum valley usable for settlement and public activity.
Forum of Augustus: A monumental forum in Rome built by Augustus and dedicated in 2 BCE. It extended the city’s civic center while presenting Augustus’s political authority.
Catiline conspiracy: A failed attempt in 63 BCE by Lucius Sergius Catilina and associates to seize power in Rome. Cicero’s public speeches against Catiline made the Forum a stage for crisis politics.
