Roman–Persian Wars

A series of conflicts between Roman and Persian empires, fought intermittently from the first century BCE until the Arab conquests of the seventh century.

Battle of Carrhae: A 53 BCE battle in which Parthian forces defeated a Roman army led by Marcus Licinius Crassus. The defeat established an early pattern of Roman vulnerability to Parthian cavalry.
Roman–Persian frontier: The shifting border zone between Roman and Persian territories in the Near East. Its contested cities and routes concentrated military pressure throughout the wars.
Roman–Parthian relations: The political and military relationship between Rome and the Parthian Empire from the first century BCE to the third century CE. Parthian conflict formed the first major phase of the longer Roman–Persian rivalry.
Byzantine–Sasanian War of 572–591: A prolonged war between the Byzantine and Sasanian empires, ended by a treaty restoring much of the status quo. Its settlement temporarily stabilized the border before renewed conflict a decade later.
Roman–Parthian War of 161–166: A war in which Roman forces invaded Armenia and Mesopotamia and captured Ctesiphon. Its Roman victories briefly extended imperial control deep into Parthian territory.
Nisibis: An ancient city in Upper Mesopotamia, repeatedly contested and held by Rome and Persia. Its position made it a key fortress and bargaining point on the frontier.
Parthian Empire: An Iranian empire that ruled much of the Near East from the third century BCE to the third century CE. It was Rome's principal Persian rival before the Sasanians came to power.
Heraclius: Byzantine emperor from 610 to 641 who led a successful counteroffensive against the Sasanians. His campaigns reversed Persian gains but left Byzantium depleted.
Roman–Persian War of 602–628: The final major war between the Byzantine Empire and the Sasanian Empire, ending in exhaustion for both. Its devastation left both empires weakened shortly before the Arab conquests.
Ctesiphon: The principal capital of the Parthian and later Sasanian empires, near modern Baghdad. Roman campaigns repeatedly targeted this imperial center without securing lasting control.
