Rouran Khaganate

The Rouran Khaganate was a confederation of nomadic peoples that dominated Mongolia and surrounding regions from the fourth to sixth centuries. Its rulers helped establish the title khagan for steppe emperors.

Steppe confederation: A political alliance of mobile peoples organized under leaders who coordinate warfare and diplomacy across grasslands. The Rouran state held together diverse groups through this flexible political form.
Xianbei: A confederation of peoples who rose to prominence in northern China and Mongolia during the first millennium CE. The Rouran emerged from the political world shaped by Xianbei migrations and successor states.
Yujiulü Shelun: The Rouran ruler credited with consolidating the khaganate in the late fourth and early fifth centuries. His campaigns and adoption of the title khagan marked the state's rise.
First Turkic Khaganate: A Turkic empire founded in 552 that ruled a broad expanse of Inner Asia. It replaced Rouran power and carried the khagan title into a new imperial era.
Rouran language: The poorly documented language or languages spoken by the Rouran ruling group and its subjects. No substantial surviving text securely identifies the language spoken by Rouran rulers.

Rouran ethnogenesis: The debated process by which the Rouran people and ruling confederation formed. Their origins are reconstructed from sparse Chinese chronicles and uncertain linguistic evidence.
