Khan

A sovereign or high-ranking ruler among Turkic and Mongol peoples. The title was used across Central Asia and neighboring regions, with its authority and rank varying by polity and period.

Göktürks: A Turkic confederation that ruled much of Central Asia from the sixth to eighth centuries. Their rulers used the title khagan, an early form associated with the title’s political tradition.
Kurultai: An assembly of Mongol and Turkic elites convened to make major political decisions, including selecting rulers. A kurultai could confirm a claimant’s authority to rule as khan.
Sultan: An Islamic title for a ruler or sovereign, historically used across a wide range of Muslim polities. Sultan expressed a different political tradition, though some rulers held both titles.
Timurid Empire: A Central Asian empire founded by Timur in the late fourteenth century and ruled by his descendants. Timur’s descendants used Chinggisid lineage and khanly titles to support political legitimacy.
Rouran Khaganate: A nomadic empire in Inner Asia that flourished from the fourth to sixth centuries. Its rulers are among the earliest known to bear the title khagan.
Mongol succession: The practices and conflicts through which Mongol rulers inherited or claimed political authority. Succession disputes determined who could hold the khan’s title and command its followers.
Emperor: A sovereign ruler of an empire, often ranking above kings or other subordinate rulers. Khan could designate a regional ruler, while emperor more directly signaled imperial supremacy.
Mughal Empire: A South Asian empire founded by Babur in 1526 and ruled by his descendants until the nineteenth century. Its name reflects a historical connection to Mongols, whose rulers were known as khans.
Mongol Empire: A thirteenth-century empire founded by Genghis Khan that became the largest contiguous land empire in history. Its rulers made khan one of Eurasia’s most consequential titles.
Mongol military tactics: The cavalry-centered methods Mongol armies used for mobility, coordination, and conquest. A khan’s authority depended partly on organizing and directing forces capable of expansion.
