Royal Proclamation of 1763

A decree issued by George III in 1763 that organized British rule in newly acquired North American territories and restricted colonial settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains.

Proclamation Line of 1763: A boundary along the Appalachian watershed beyond which British colonists were generally barred from settling under the 1763 proclamation. This line gave the proclamation’s western settlement restriction a visible geographic form.
Seven Years' War: A global conflict fought from 1756 to 1763 among European powers and their allies. Britain’s territorial gains at the war’s end made a new governing policy necessary.
