Rudolf Virchow

Rudolf Virchow (1821–1902) was a German physician, pathologist, and politician who helped establish cellular pathology and argued that social conditions shape public health.

Robert Remak: A German embryologist and histologist who demonstrated that cells arise from preexisting cells. Remak established the cell-division principle Virchow popularized as “omnis cellula e cellula.”
Omnis cellula e cellula: The principle that every cell arises from another preexisting cell. Virchow used this maxim to reject spontaneous generation of cells in diseased tissue.
Upper Silesian typhus epidemic: A severe typhus outbreak in Upper Silesia in 1847–1848 that prompted a major public-health investigation. Virchow’s report treated the epidemic as a social and political crisis as well as a medical one.
Cellular pathology: The study of disease as changes in cells and tissues, rather than disturbances of the body as a whole. Virchow’s textbook made cellular pathology a durable foundation of modern medicine.
Johannes Müller: A German physiologist and anatomist who trained many influential nineteenth-century scientists. Müller’s Berlin laboratory trained Virchow and shaped his early scientific outlook.
Cell theory: The biological framework that organisms consist of cells and that cells are fundamental units of life. Virchow extended cell theory from normal biology to the study of disease.
Social medicine: An approach to health that examines how social, economic, and political conditions shape disease. Virchow argued that addressing poverty and political exclusion was necessary for public health.
Anthropology: The comparative study of human beings, societies, cultures, and biological variation. Virchow’s research and public work extended beyond medicine into the study of human populations.
Theodor Schwann: A German physiologist who helped formulate cell theory and identified the cellular basis of animal tissues. Schwann’s cell theory supplied a framework Virchow extended into pathology.
Thrombosis: The formation of a blood clot inside a blood vessel or heart chamber. Virchow’s investigations of clot formation helped distinguish thrombosis from clots formed after death.
