Ryanggang Province

Ryanggang Province is a mountainous province in northern North Korea, bordering China across the Yalu River and centered on Hyesan. It includes much of the country’s highest terrain, including Mount Paektu.

Hyesan: Hyesan is a city in northern North Korea on the Yalu River, opposite Changbai in China. The provincial capital and largest city anchors Ryanggang’s population and administration.
Korean Highlands: The Korean Highlands are the elevated mountain and plateau regions concentrated in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. Ryanggang forms a major part of this highland system.
Korean people: Koreans are an East Asian people whose historic homeland includes the Korean Peninsula and nearby regions. Ryanggang is part of the northern Korean homeland and has communities with distinct borderland ties.
Samjiyon: Samjiyon is a city in Ryanggang Province near Mount Paektu and the China–North Korea border. Its extensive redevelopment made it a prominent showcase for state-led construction in the province.
Mount Paektu: Mount Paektu is a volcanic mountain on the China–North Korea border and the highest peak of the Korean Peninsula. Its summit dominates the province’s northern highlands and national geography.
Continental climate: A continental climate has large seasonal temperature contrasts and relatively limited maritime moderation. Ryanggang’s inland elevation produces severe winters and short, cool summers.
Korean diaspora in China: The Korean diaspora in China includes ethnic Korean communities, especially the large population in Jilin Province. Communities across the Yalu share a regional history with Ryanggang’s border population.
Pochonbo: Pochonbo is a town in Ryanggang Province, known in North Korea for a 1937 anti-Japanese raid. The event gives the province a central place in official revolutionary history.
Yalu River: The Yalu River forms much of the border between North Korea and China before flowing into the Yellow Sea. It defines Ryanggang’s international boundary and links Hyesan with China.
Taebaek Mountains: The Taebaek Mountains are a long mountain range running mainly along the eastern side of the Korean Peninsula. Unlike Ryanggang’s northern plateau, this range follows the peninsula’s eastern coast.
