Ryukyu Islands

The Ryukyu Islands are an island chain stretching southwest from Kyushu toward Taiwan, including the Amami Islands and Okinawa. Their varied environments and position between Japan and Taiwan have shaped distinctive cultures and histories.

Nansei Islands: An island arc extending southwest from Kyushu to Taiwan, including the Ryukyu Islands. This broader geographic name places the Ryukyu chain within the full arc.
Ryukyu Kingdom: An independent kingdom centered on Okinawa that flourished from the fifteenth century until its annexation by Japan in 1879. The kingdom unified much of the chain and built its regional trade networks.
Okinawan language: A Japonic language traditionally spoken on Okinawa Island and nearby islands, distinct from Japanese. It exemplifies the Ryukyuan languages and the chain’s linguistic diversity.
Yanbaru National Park: A protected area in northern Okinawa Island known for subtropical forests and endemic wildlife. Its forests preserve a distinctive ecosystem within the Ryukyu chain.
Taiwan: An island in the western Pacific, southwest of the Ryukyu Islands, with a distinct political and cultural history. Taiwan lies just beyond the chain’s southwestern end and has long been a nearby point of exchange.
Okinawa Islands: The central island group of the Ryukyu Islands, including Okinawa Island. This group contains the chain’s largest population center and its best-known island.
Satsuma Domain: A Japanese domain that invaded the Ryukyu Kingdom in 1609 and thereafter exerted control over it. Satsuma’s invasion began the kingdom’s long period of constrained independence.
Amami language: A group of Japonic varieties spoken in the Amami Islands, often classified within the Ryukyuan languages. Its differences from Okinawan show how speech communities vary across the island chain.
Iriomote-Ishigaki National Park: A national park in the Yaeyama Islands protecting coral reefs, mangroves, and subtropical habitats. It illustrates how conservation protects the chain’s southern island environments.
Kyushu: The southwesternmost of Japan’s four main islands, north of the Ryukyu Islands. Kyushu anchors the chain’s northern end and connects it to mainland Japan.
