Saichō

Saichō (767–822) was a Japanese Buddhist monk who founded the Tendai school after studying in Tang China. He established Enryaku-ji on Mount Hiei as its headquarters.

Tendai: A Japanese Buddhist school founded by Saichō, centered on the Lotus Sutra and shaped by several Mahayana practices. Saichō founded this school after bringing teachings from Tang China to Japan.

Bodhisattva precepts: Ethical commitments associated with the Mahayana bodhisattva path, emphasizing compassion and the pursuit of awakening for all beings. Saichō argued that Tendai monks should receive Mahayana precepts rather than rely solely on the established vinaya ordination system.
