Salome

Salome is a woman named in the Gospels among those associated with Jesus’s ministry and the tomb. Mark identifies her as one of the women who found Jesus’s tomb empty.

Mark 15:40–41: A passage naming women who watched Jesus’s crucifixion and had followed and provided for him in Galilee. It names Salome among the women present at the crucifixion.
Mary Magdalene: A follower of Jesus who appears in Gospel accounts of his crucifixion and the discovery of his empty tomb. She appears alongside Salome in Mark’s accounts of the cross and tomb.
Women at the tomb: Women named in Gospel accounts as visiting Jesus’s tomb after his crucifixion. Salome belongs to this group in Mark, while the other Gospels give different names.
Myrrhbearers: Women in Eastern Christian tradition who brought spices to Jesus’s tomb after his death. Salome’s visit with spices underlies her inclusion among the myrrhbearers.
Mark 16:1–8: A Gospel passage describing women who went to Jesus’s tomb and found it open and empty. It names Salome among the women who brought spices to the tomb.
Mary, mother of James: A woman named in Gospel accounts of Jesus’s crucifixion and the visit to his tomb. Mark names her with Salome among the women who went to the tomb.
Zebedee: The father of the apostles James and John, identified in the Gospels as a Galilean fisherman. Some interpreters connect Salome with the unnamed mother of Zebedee’s sons, but the identification is uncertain.
Three Marys: A Christian devotional grouping of Mary Magdalene and other women named Mary at Jesus’s cross or tomb. Traditions grouped Salome with the women at the tomb, though she is not one of the Marys.
Matthew 27:55–56: A passage naming women who watched Jesus’s crucifixion, including Mary Magdalene and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. Its list differs from Mark’s and does not name Salome.
Joanna: A woman associated with Jesus’s ministry who appears in Luke’s account of the empty tomb. Luke names her among the women at the tomb, where Mark names Salome.
