Sanriku Coast

A rugged Pacific coastline in northeastern Honshu, Japan, spanning parts of Aomori, Iwate, and Miyagi prefectures. Its deeply indented ria shores and exposure to tsunamis shape its settlements and landscapes.

Rikuzentakata: A coastal city in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, severely damaged by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. Its low-lying shore became one of the Sanriku Coast’s most visible sites of tsunami devastation and reconstruction.
