Satsuma Rebellion

The Satsuma Rebellion was an 1877 uprising by former samurai in Japan’s Satsuma region against the Meiji government, led by Saigō Takamori and defeated by government forces.

Siege of Kumamoto Castle: A prolonged 1877 siege in which Satsuma forces failed to capture a government-held castle in Kumamoto. The failed siege became the rebellion’s decisive early setback.
Abolition of the han system: The 1871 replacement of Japan’s feudal domains with centrally governed prefectures. It ended Satsuma’s status as an autonomous domain before the rebellion.
Saigō Takamori: A Japanese samurai and Meiji-era political leader who commanded the Satsuma Rebellion. He led the revolt after resigning from the central government.
