Scramble for Africa

The Scramble for Africa was the rapid invasion, occupation, and partition of most of Africa by European powers during the late 19th century. It accelerated colonial rule and imposed borders that often disregarded existing African states and communities.

Berlin Conference: The 1884–1885 meeting at which European powers set rules for claiming territory in Africa. Its effective-occupation principle encouraged powers to establish control before rivals could claim the same territory.
New Imperialism: The expansion of European overseas empire from the late 19th century into the early 20th century. The partition of Africa was a major expression of this broader imperial expansion.
Leopold II of Belgium: King of Belgium from 1865 to 1909 who established personal rule over the Congo Free State. His campaign for Congo territory helped trigger international competition for African claims.
Colonial borders in Africa: International boundaries imposed or formalized by colonial powers across Africa. Many borders emerged from partition agreements that gave limited regard to African political and social boundaries.
Battle of Adwa: The 1896 Ethiopian victory over invading Italian forces near Adwa in northern Ethiopia. It decisively blocked Italy's attempt to establish colonial rule over Ethiopia.
Effective occupation: The principle that a power claiming African territory had to demonstrate actual authority there. It converted competing paper claims into pressure for military occupation and administration.
Industrial Revolution: The transition to mechanized production that began in Britain in the 18th century and spread worldwide. Industrial economies sought raw materials, markets, and strategic routes that strengthened imperial ambitions.
Cecil Rhodes: A British imperialist and politician who promoted British expansion in southern Africa. His ambitions for a British-controlled route across Africa embodied the era's imperial competition.
Colonialism in Africa: Foreign political domination and economic control exercised by European powers over African territories. The Scramble established the territorial framework for decades of colonial rule.
Ethiopian Empire: A state centered in the Ethiopian highlands that maintained independence through much of the colonial era. Its survival contrasts with the territorial subjugation of most African states during the partition.
