Sea of Japan

The Sea of Japan is a marginal sea of the western Pacific Ocean bordered by Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and Russia. It connects to neighboring seas through several narrow straits.

Korean Peninsula: A peninsula in East Asia bordered by the Yellow Sea, the Sea of Japan, and the Korea Strait. Its eastern coast forms the sea’s western boundary.
Tsushima Current: A warm ocean current that enters the Sea of Japan through the Korea Strait and flows northeastward. It brings relatively warm, saline water into the sea from the south.
Fishing industry of Japan: The commercial harvesting and processing of fish and other marine resources in Japanese waters. Sea of Japan fisheries contribute to Japan’s coastal food and fishing economies.
Sea of Japan naming dispute: A dispute over the international name of the sea, especially between Japan and South Korea. The sea’s name is contested as part of broader disputes over history and representation.
Japanese archipelago: A chain of islands in the western Pacific that includes Japan’s four main islands and thousands of smaller islands. The archipelago encloses the sea along its eastern and southern sides.
Liman Current: A cold coastal current that flows southward along the Russian coast of the Sea of Japan. It carries cold, relatively fresh water from the north along the western margin.
Japanese flying squid: A migratory squid species found in the northwestern Pacific and surrounding seas, including the Sea of Japan. It is a commercially valuable species harvested in these waters.
East Sea: The name South Korea promotes internationally for the body of water commonly called the Sea of Japan. It is the principal alternative name in the naming dispute.
Tatar Strait: A strait between Sakhalin Island and mainland Russia connecting the Sea of Japan with the Sea of Okhotsk. It is the northern outlet linking the sea to the Sea of Okhotsk.
Japan Sea Proper Water: A cold, oxygen-rich deep water mass occupying much of the Sea of Japan below the surface layers. Winter cooling and circulation help form the sea’s distinctive deep water.
