Second United Front

The Second United Front was a wartime alliance between the Chinese Communist Party and the Kuomintang, formed in 1937 to resist Japanese invasion. It held despite continuing rivalry and armed conflict between the allies.

Xi'an Incident: A 1936 seizure of Chiang Kai-shek by his own generals, who demanded an end to civil war and resistance to Japan. The crisis pushed Chiang toward cooperation with the Communists.
Kuomintang: A Chinese political party that led the Nationalist government and its armed forces during the war against Japan. It was the larger state power and principal formal partner in the alliance.
Battle of Shanghai: A major 1937 battle in which Chinese forces fought Japanese troops for control of Shanghai. The Nationalist army bore the cost of a prominent early campaign against Japan.
Yan'an Rectification Movement: A 1942–1945 campaign to discipline the Chinese Communist Party and consolidate Mao Zedong's authority at Yan'an. Wartime expansion made party cohesion and centralized leadership pressing concerns.
Mukden Incident: A 1931 explosion near Mukden, staged by Japanese officers as a pretext for occupying Manchuria. Japan's expansion after this incident created the long-term threat the alliance opposed.
Chinese Communist Party: A Chinese political party founded in 1921 that built a separate revolutionary movement and armed forces. It entered the alliance while retaining its own leadership, army, and political program.
Battle of Taierzhuang: A 1938 Chinese victory over Japanese forces near Taierzhuang in Shandong Province. The battle demonstrated that Japanese advances could be checked by Chinese forces.
Mao Zedong: A Chinese Communist leader who became the party's paramount figure during the war against Japan. The alliance years helped him strengthen his control over the Communist movement.
Marco Polo Bridge Incident: A July 1937 clash near Beijing that escalated into full-scale war between China and Japan. The outbreak of general war made a united front urgent.
Eighth Route Army: A Communist-led army formed from Red Army units and nominally incorporated into China's National Revolutionary Army in 1937. It gave the Communist side a distinct force within the wartime coalition.
