Semi-presidential system

A system of government with a popularly elected president and a prime minister who leads a cabinet responsible to the legislature. Executive authority is shared between president and prime minister, though the balance varies by constitution and political practice.

President: A head of state who may also hold executive powers, depending on the constitutional system. The popularly elected president is one of the system’s two executive centers.
Parliamentary system: A system of government in which the executive depends on the confidence of the legislature and is commonly led by a prime minister. It lacks the separately elected president that distinguishes semi-presidential government.
French Fifth Republic: The French constitutional regime established in 1958, with a powerful president and a government responsible to parliament. France is a prominent example whose executive balance changes with parliamentary alignment.
